USB Design Quality Control of flash memory chips
For some USB flash disk manufacturers who are competing on price in order to win customers, they are under pressure to reduce costs and maintain margin. The following are various ways in which some USB memory factories try to deceive their customers.
Masking
Some factories use USB flash chip which is smaller than marketed (i.e. use 16MB and marked as 1Gbyte.) and use a masking technology to misguide the user.
This is done by exchanging a controller chip on the USB memory stick and fooling the operating system that the full nominal capacity is available.
These USB memory sticks will function as normal if they just store a small quantity of data but they will lose information as soon as they try to save more than 16MB.

USB Flash Chip
The flash chip determines the capacity of the USB memory stick. In order to reduce cost increasing number of manufacturers use rejected or recycled USB flash chips. These USB flash chips have been discarded by the likes of Toshiba and Samsung and they can be brought for a fraction of its normal cost.
Using these USB memory sticks will cause the PC to crash and it will lose data or corrupt files. Here at USB Design we only use reputable manufacturers such as Toshiba, Samsung and Hynix.

PCB board
There are over 4000 different types of material that can be used to manufacture a USB flash disk PCB board. These materials include glass fibre, plastic and paper. To reduce cost some factories mix more expensive materials (plastic) with paper but if that proportional is too high then over time the PCB board is more likely to crack and break substantially reducing the life span of the USB memory stick.
